With a bigger, bolder, more powerful sound that goes low and wide without forgoing expression and clarity, there’s no doubt that the new Play:5 succeeds in completely overshadowing its predecessor. It’s a touch pricier at £429 (the original was £350), but then you can hear where ever penny of that extra cash has been spent.

The Play:5’s rich, exciting and articulate way of delivering the best the streaming world has to offer, all as part of an excellent multi-room set up, makes it a truly compelling buy for both current Sonos owners and newcomers alike.

screen-shot-2016-11-14-at-21-18-12 Inside the Play:5 are six custom-designed drivers: three mid-woofers and three tweeters for the high frequencies. These are paired with six class-D amplifiers. The Play:5 is able to deliver room-filling sound with aplomb. The bass, in particular, is rich with a good degree of weight and impact but they don’t muddy the highs. The mids and treble, in fact, are bright and crisp. The hi-hats in a jazz track are distinct and vocals have a wonderful clarity. Across genres the Sonos managed to perform exceptionally delivering impact and excitement when tracks required it, or a more delicate touch for acoustic, vocal-driven songs.
screen-shot-2016-11-14-at-21-21-01 The Sonos Play:5 is a stunning speaker for its price range – yes, it’s premium but the so is the sound. Its minimalist design will please even the most fussy and the new touch controls are effortless to use. The sound that comes out of this thing is impressively loud and audio does distinctively change when Trueplay is used.
